by The Malin Journal

September 18, 2024

After his granddad opened a coffee shop in Ghana, Shannon Sanders, Jr. brought the lesser-used Ghanaian-grown Robusta beans stateside, founding Cape Coast Coffee Co., a single-origin coffee brand roasted, brewed, and canned in Nashville.

Discover more about Shannon’s family’s coffee legacy, the story of Cape Coast Coffee Co., and what fuels his passion as a business owner.
As told to The Malin Journal
The Family Connection
My dad is a musician who drank coffee at night in the studio, which showed me that everyone has their own coffee ritual. This, along with America’s grab-and-go culture, inspired us to create canned coffee specifically. But it all started with my great-granddad, who became a coffee lover when Peet’s opened in Oakland in the ‘60s. This passion was passed down to my granddad, whose love for coffee and travel took him to coffee farms around the world. After moving to Ghana, my granddad and his wife opened a coffee house, collaborating with farmers in the Volta region to source high-quality coffee beans. Cape Coast Coffee House has since become a community hub in Ghana, serving coffee made from Ghanaian Robusta beans and other drinks crafted with native ingredients.
The Catalyst
The first can I launched is called Catalyst, made with the same beans used at my granddad’s coffee shop. Robusta coffee is grown at lower elevations, making it easier and less expensive to cultivate in warm climates. It’s also more resilient to pests, diseases, and environmental challenges. From a flavor standpoint, the beans grow in the same soil that produces cocoa, resulting in deep, chocolatey notes.
El Jeffe
Our second brew, El Jeffe, is affectionately misspelled to honor my granddad, Jeff. “El jefe” means “boss” in Spanish. The beans in this can are from Chiapas, Mexico, sourced from another region he visited during his travels. Similar to most Arabica coffee, it has lighter, nutty, and fruity notes. We’ve incorporated Ghanaian cocoa into the brew to create our take on a canned mocha without the dairy and sugar. Everything we make ties back to a story — of family and the farmers who produce the coffee.
More Than Coffee
What inspires me to run Cape Coast Coffee Co. is the opportunity to build upon the foundation my granddad established. I am passionate about redefining the coffee experience and building a business where collaboration and creativity thrive. Our focus on single-origin coffee extends beyond the bean-to-can process; we prioritize direct relationships with producers to ensure fair compensation. From production to consumption, coffee is about community. As we expand, we are committed to maintaining these values, ensuring that everything we create has a story and a meaningful impact.
What’s Next
We’re exploring some teas and other collaborations. Every drink we launch will stay true to our commitment to single-origin sourcing and the integrity of our standards.
