Where to book a power lunch

Montague Diner

Occupying a former 24-hour diner that closed in 2020, Montague Diner is a return to form with a few special upgrades, thanks to the chefs behind Fort Greene hotspot, Margot. Talk shop over a perfect turkey club or one of their “big salads.” Regulars can open a house account and keep their card on file for easy billing.

Where to go for post-work drinks

Long Island Bar

Long Island Bar co-owner Toby Cecchini is credited as the inventor of the Cosmopolitan, and here you can order it frozen. Settle into the nostalgic, neon-lit bar with one of their house cocktails, and grab some fries when hunger strikes.

Where to catch up over coffee

Náko

Nestled along quaint Columbia Place, Náko’s bright cafe has plenty of room to sit with a friend over a perfectly poured latte. Beyond coffee, Náko serves as a community hub, with rotating exhibitions from local artists and takeovers with independent roasters.

Where to grab a quick bite

Lassen & Hennings

Open since 1949, Lassen & Hennings calls itself a deli, though in our book it’s closer to a specialty grocer. Yes, you can get a perfect sandwich for lunch, but you can also pick up a beautiful cake or dinner party gift after you’ve finished the workday.

Where to celebrate a win

Inga’s Bar

This cozy corner restaurant is the genius collaboration between husband-and-wife chef Sean Rembold and fashion designer Caron Callahan. Order the crisp house martini and our perennial favorite, the agnolotti, plus a handful of rotating sides for a perfect celebratory meal. The burger here is also one of the best in NYC.

Best place to pick up a thank-you gift

Salter House

From the trendy Gerdana clogs to an in-house line of American-made pewter, Salter House is a uniquely Brooklyn boutique and cafe. The Shaker-esque storefront might just inspire you to change your aesthetic, or at least the way you approach gift-giving. For something higher-ticket, Salter House also owns the next-door gallery, Picture Room.

Where to get an afternoon sweet treat

Diljān

One of the newest additions to Brooklyn Heights, Diljān is an Afghan bakery from the team behind Queens favorite Little Flower. The pastries are full of Middle Eastern flavors like saffron, almond, and pistachio. While the sweets are not to be missed, their savory flatbreads are also a highlight here.

Where to upgrade your living space

Collyer’s Mansion

The ever-inspiring selection of housewares, art, and textiles makes this shop a perfect place to dream up ideas for your home. Whether you’re in the market for an original painting, a unique chandelier, or new pillows, there’s eye candy in every corner of this small but mighty space.

Where to go thrifting

Housing Works

If you’re a New Yorker, you know the thrift store chain Housing Works…and if you don’t, you’re going to love it. All proceeds support the organization’s work providing inclusive care, social justice initiatives, and ending homelessness. The small footprint of this location works for both a quick pop-in or lengthy digging session through racks of vintage dresses and men’s shirting. There’s also a great selection of home goods to round out your haul.

Where to take a walk

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

New York City has only one protected view, and this is it. The Promenade runs along the bluff of Brooklyn Heights (directly above the BQE), offering a perfect spot to walk for inspiration, catch views of the skyline, and on sunny days, enjoy your lunch.

Where to get inspired

Books Are Magic

Here’s a bookstore that really does it all: children’s books, the hottest new novels (some from store owner and author Emma Straub), and cookbooks galore. Magical inspiration awaits in any bookstore, but especially at Books Are Magic—it’s all in the name. Stay in the loop for book talks and community events that make for perfect post-work hangs.
